AFTER THE SALE

Wow, the girls and I worked hard for the money.  It surely is hard to make a gazillion dollars a quarter at a time at a yard sale.

After the attic cleaning and deciding to let go of some much-loved pieces of totally worthless junk, we produced a gigantic yard sale.  The weather on Friday morning was absolutely perfect and Johnny was such a trooper dragging everything down to the front yard in front of our little shack.  Big job!!!  Of course the first shopper came at 6:15 a.m. and was a picker who is going to resell our stuff.  It was midnight dark.  Now that is dedication to the hunt.  Lots of friends and neighbors stopped by to visit and shop.  Great fun.

About 4:00 p.m. we noticed dark clouds and then the shower came.  We looked like worker bees trying to get everything under tables and covered up with huge sheets of black plastic which my sweet hubby provided.  We closed up shop for the day a bit disappointed that the day ended just when everyone was getting off work for the weekend and would be passing our way.  Of course as soon as we got it all sealed up, the rain went poof and disappeared.

While in a deep sleep at about 3:00 a.m. a frog choking rain woke me and soaked our yard.  What shape would our stuff be in?  All I could think was, "Thank you God for the little shower yesterday so that we had everything covered up."   We surely had no idea that rain was coming.  The miles and miles of plastic worked like a charm and we whipped it off at the crack of dawn and had another day of making bushels of money.

All said and done, we took in about $500.00.  Not too shabby.  But more important than the money, the most fun of all was had by 5 year old grandson Baker.  He showed up with daddy about mid morning Saturday and low-and-behold mommy was selling his toys that he thought had disappeared forever.  Oh where, oh where had these precious treasures been for so long?  Mommy had been caught.  Now she had to make a deal with him and let him take home at least one old treasure - maybe one of his beloved fire trucks.  This was a decision that took all day to make.   We never heard a peep out of that boy all day.  A little man with his toys.

The attic is again only about half full, closets have empty rods, less clutter is in the garage and we were able to help a few people who have fallen on hard times and can use some of our treasures.  Now if we can just all recover from the pulled muscles and fatigue without medical attention, we will begin stock piling for another day.

GARDEN UPDATE

We have managed to enjoy the very first fruits of our garden.  Lots of folks do not like asparagus, but you just cannot imagine how tasty fresh picked ones are.  This is the first year we have managed to have any to eat.  They take several years to get established and make a crop and this is our second year.  We have gotten 4 stalks so far which were pretty yummy when mixed with some herbs from the garden and carrots from the store for a bite of salad.

While I was out checking the garden progress yesterday I happened upon Mrs. Beulah Bluebird house hunting for a summer home.  Luckily we have six choices in our yard and I think she has already closed a deal on one of the older ones right among the broccoli and cauliflower.  Maybe I didn't scare her off and she will continue to feather her nest.  If you look really hard, you can see her sitting on the thicket fence to the right side of the birdhouse.

Our 9 year old granddaughter Amber wanted a garden of her own, so we finagled a little bed out of an old car tire where she could plant a few potatoes.  I figured she better plant something that she might actually put in her mouth when it gets ready to harvest.  That means anything that is not green and good for you.  This is not exactly a pretty piece of yard art, but ease of tending to it was the issue here.

I just have to share the old shack with narcissus blooms.  I don't know what I'll take pictures of when she falls to the ground.

Smell all the flowers you can.
